Discovery of Dismembered Remains in Biscayne Bay
In early June 2009, Miami residents were horrified by a series of gruesome discoveries along the shores of Biscayne Bay. It began when a cyclist spotted a suspicious bag floating near the 79th Street Causeway. Upon investigation, authorities found human body parts inside. Over the next three days, additional bags containing dismembered human remains surfaced in various locations, including near I-195 and NE 96th Street. These macabre findings sent shockwaves through the community and initiated an intense police investigation.
Identification of the Victim: Osben Laparra
The victim was soon identified as 21-year-old Osben Laparra, a Guatemalan immigrant working as a construction laborer in Miami. Described by family and friends as a hardworking and amiable individual, Osben had no known enemies. His sister, Aveda Laparra, recounted, "My brother was a good man and a hard worker." Osben had been missing since May 31, 2009, after a night out at Club El Mexicano on Calle Ocho.
