In the predawn darkness of August 8, 2016, Chicago police officers responded to a distress call reporting a shooting incident in the 3200 block of West Walnut Street. Upon arrival at approximately 2:25 a.m., they discovered 43-year-old Lee Andrew Martin lying unresponsive on the sidewalk. He had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his head and back and was pronounced dead at the scene by 2:39 a.m. The sudden and violent nature of Martin's death sent shockwaves through the East Garfield Park neighborhood, a community already grappling with issues of violence and crime.
The Immediate Aftermath and Investigation
Following the discovery, the Chicago Police Department launched an investigation into Martin's murder.
