At approximately 5 p.m., gunshots rang out, striking Melvin in the leg and abdomen. Despite being rushed to a nearby children's hospital, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of September 6. Melvin's untimely death not only devastated his family but also sent shockwaves through a community already grappling with pervasive violence.

Melvin was a former student of Moses Montefiore Academy, an institution on Chicago's West Side dedicated to high-risk youth.
