On the evening of September 5, 2017, 14-year-old Melvin James Jr. was walking just a few blocks from his home in the South Chicago neighborhood. At approximately 5 p.m., gunshots rang out, striking Melvin in the leg and abdomen. Despite being rushed to a nearby children's hospital, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of September 6. Melvin's untimely death not only devastated his family but also sent shockwaves through a community already grappling with pervasive violence.

Melvin was a former student of Moses Montefiore Academy, an institution on Chicago's West Side dedicated to high-risk youth. The school, often seen as a last resort for students facing significant challenges, provided a structured environment aimed at redirecting troubled youths. Melvin's time at Montefiore was documented in the series "Last Chance High," where he appeared in Episode 5.
