In the early hours of January 9, 2017, the tranquility of New Orleans East was shattered. At approximately 2:33 a.m., New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of Dale and Warfield Streets. Upon arrival, they discovered 52-year-old Louis Monroe inside a vehicle, fatally shot. Initially, his death was unclassified, but the Orleans Parish Coroner later determined it to be a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.
Monroe's murder was not an isolated incident. Since the beginning of 2017, the area had experienced a surge in violence. On New Year's Day, an 18-year-old was shot 13 times at the same intersection. In a cruel twist of fate, as family and friends gathered on January 10 to hold a vigil for Monroe, another tragedy struck. Just steps away from the vigil site, 37-year-old Wilbert Thomas was shot and killed on Warfield Street. Neighbors reported that Thomas had been with Monroe when he was killed, leading many to believe the two incidents were connected.
The spate of violence left residents in fear and mourning. Davin Murthil, a local resident, expressed his concern, stating, "It's a shame youngsters keep taking youngsters' lives out here. It's just not right." Another neighbor, Clarence Coleman, worried about the safety of children in the area, emphasizing the need for a secure environment for the community's youth. ...Read More
