Early Life and Career Beginnings
John Eric Lake was born on February 18, 1930, in Albany, New York. He pursued higher education at Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. During his time at Syracuse, Lake was an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. It was also at Syracuse that he met his future wife, Alice Conlin. The couple married in 1952 while Lake was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, serving in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, Lake returned to Syracuse to further his studies.
Professional Ascension in Journalism
Lake's journalism career commenced at the Binghamton News Press in 1952, where both he and his wife were employed—he in the sports department and she writing features. By 1959, Lake had secured a position as a staff writer at the New York Herald Tribune, working alongside notable figures such as Red Smith. His prowess in sports journalism led him to Newsweek in February 1964, where he succeeded Dick Schaap as the magazine's sports editor. During his tenure, Lake authored several cover stories on diverse topics, including "The Black Athlete," the Indianapolis 500, and the World Series.
