Jason Derek Brown was born on July 1, 1969, in Los Angeles, California. He attended Laguna Beach High School, where he was known for his charismatic personality and athletic prowess. Brown became fluent in French and earned a master's degree in international business. Between 1988 and 1990, he served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Paris, France. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Brown resided in various cities within Orange County, California, including Dana Point and Corona del Mar. He established two businesses based in Salt Lake City, Utah—Toys Unlimited and On The Doorstep Advertising—which he operated from his home. Despite projecting an image of affluence, Brown was deeply in debt, defaulting on significant loans and accumulating tens of thousands of dollars in liabilities by 2004.

The Crime: Murder and Robbery

On the morning of November 29, 2004, 24-year-old armored car guard Robert Keith Palomares was transporting weekend deposits outside the AMC theater at 4915 E. Ray Road in Phoenix, Arizona. At approximately 10 a.m., a hooded gunman ambushed Palomares, shooting him five times in the head with a .45 caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol.
