On the morning of November 19, 1988, nine-year-old Michaela Garecht and her best friend, Katrina Rodriguez, set out on their scooters to the Rainbow Market in Hayward, California. Their mission was simple: purchase some snacks and enjoy their Saturday. They left their scooters near the store's entrance and went inside. Upon exiting, they noticed Michaela's scooter had been moved closer to a parked vehicle. As Michaela approached to retrieve it, a man suddenly grabbed her, forcing her into his car as she screamed for help.
