Disappearance in Downtown Wilmington

Shannon Rippy VanNewkirk, a 53-year-old resident of Wilmington, North Carolina, was last seen on April 5, 2014, at The Husk, a bar located in the 30 block of South Front Street. She had recently gotten a haircut and a spray tan in anticipation of her 54th birthday, which was the following day. When she failed to attend a planned birthday lunch, her family grew concerned. They visited her home on South 5th Street, leaving presents on her porch. When the gifts remained untouched the next day, they reported her missing to the authorities.

Investigation and Arrest of James Opelton Bradley

During the investigation, attention turned to James Opelton Bradley, a coworker of VanNewkirk at Mott’s Landscaping. Bradley, who had a romantic interest in her, was on parole for the 1988 murder of his 8-year-old stepdaughter, Ivy Gipson, for which he had served nearly 25 years before his release in 2013. Phone records revealed that Bradley and VanNewkirk had exchanged seventeen calls between April 1 and April 5, 2014, with all communication ceasing on the day she disappeared.
