The Midnight Terror Begins: Austin, 1884

In the waning days of 1884, the city of Austin, Texas, was thrust into a nightmare that would haunt its history. On December 30, 25-year-old Mollie Smith was brutally murdered in her bed, and her companion, Walter Spencer, was severely injured. This heinous act marked the inception of a series of gruesome killings attributed to an unidentified assailant later dubbed the "Servant Girl Annihilator" .

A Year of Bloodshed: The Victims

Over the course of 1885, the killer claimed multiple victims, instilling fear throughout Austin. Notable cases include Eliza Shelly, murdered on May 6; Irene Cross, attacked with a knife on May 22; and 11-year-old Mary Ramey, killed on August 30.
