A Routine Voyage Turns Tragic

On the morning of March 31, 2018, 45-year-old Sitka resident Sean Patrick Poffenbarger embarked on what was expected to be a routine boat trip from Sitka to Saook Point, accompanied by 49-year-old Sean Elliot of Elfin Cove. The journey took them through Peril Strait, a narrow and often treacherous waterway known for its unpredictable currents and rapidly changing weather conditions. At approximately 8:25 a.m., an emergency distress signal was activated from their vessel, prompting immediate response from the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities.

Discovery of the Overturned Skiff

Responding to the distress signal, a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka located an overturned 18-foot skiff near Goose Cove, about 30 miles north of Sitka.
