A Routine Journey Turns Tragic

On the night of July 28, 2007, 23-year-old Chad Wayne Rawls departed from Igiugig, Alaska, aboard a skiff with three companions: Clinton Abarca, Vince Rickteroff, and Lance Hobson. Their intended destination was Kokhanok, a village situated approximately 40 miles away across Lake Iliamna. What began as a routine trip across Alaska's largest lake soon transformed into a harrowing ordeal.

The Capsizing Incident

As the group navigated the lake, an unforeseen mishap occurred. The boat's anchor unexpectedly deployed, catching the lakebed and causing the vessel's bow to submerge. This sudden shift led to the skiff capsizing, throwing all four men into the frigid waters. Lance Hobson, the sole survivor, later recounted that he and his friends clung to the overturned boat, praying for rescue. Hobson, notably not wearing a life jacket, remained with the capsized vessel, a decision he believed contributed to his survival. In contrast, the others, equipped with life jackets, attempted to swim to shore but were never seen again.

The Search and Aftermath

The alarm was raised on July 30 when the skiff was reported overdue. A comprehensive search ensued, involving aerial reconnaissance, boats, and all-terrain vehicles. Hobson was discovered atop the overturned boat, suffering from hypothermia and hallucinations after three days adrift. Tragically, Vince Rickteroff's body was recovered on July 31, floating approximately three miles from the lake's southwest shore. Despite exhaustive efforts, Chad Rawls and Clinton Abarca remained missing, and the active search was eventually suspended.
