A Routine Mission Turns Tragic

On January 29, 2019, a Guardian Flight air ambulance departed Anchorage, Alaska, on a mission to retrieve a patient from the remote village of Kake. Aboard the twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 200 were pilot Patrick Coyle, 63; flight nurse Stacie Rae Morse, 30; and flight paramedic Margaret Langston, 43. All three were based in Juneau and were seasoned professionals in their respective fields. The flight was expected to land in Kake at 6:19 p.m., but it never arrived. Radar data indicated that the aircraft veered off course and plummeted into Frederick Sound, descending over 2,500 feet in just 14 seconds.

Intensive Search and Recovery Efforts

In the immediate aftermath, the U.S. Coast Guard, along with local search and rescue teams, initiated a comprehensive search operation. Debris from the aircraft was located approximately 22 miles west of Kake, near the southern tip of Admiralty Island in Chatham Strait. Despite recovering parts of the wreckage, including the cockpit voice recorder, the bodies of the three crew members were never found .
