Bryant Lee Jr. was more than just a promising athlete; he was a beacon of hope and determination in Baton Rouge. As the starting quarterback for McKinley Senior High School during the 2016 season, Lee was known for his leadership on the field and his commitment to academics, maintaining a commendable 3.5 GPA. His aspirations extended beyond high school, with plans to attend Southern University in the fall to study mechanical engineering and potentially join the football team as a walk-on. Tragically, these dreams were cut short when he was fatally shot at a graduation party just days before his commencement ceremony.
In the early hours of May 13, 2017, a graduation party near Lee's North Baton Rouge home turned deadly. Around 1:50 a.m., gunfire erupted, and Lee was struck in the head. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries during the shooting. The party, intended as a celebration of academic achievements, became the scene of a senseless act of violence that left a community in mourning.
Lee's untimely death was not his first encounter with gun violence. In November 2016, he survived a drive-by shooting that left him with a leg injury. Despite this harrowing experience, Lee remained focused on his goals, continuing to excel in both academics and athletics. His resilience in the face of adversity made his subsequent death all the more devastating for those who knew him.
The loss of Bryant Lee Jr. sent shockwaves through the Baton Rouge community. McKinley High School Principal Herman Brister described Lee as "an 18-year-old dedicated scholar who put his academics above his job as the leader of our football team." Students, teachers, and community members remembered him as intelligent, hard-working, and fun-loving. His football coach, Kenric Hilton, emphasized Lee's commitment, noting that he "didn't miss a workout" and "led by example." ...Read More
