Mark David Chapman was born on May 10, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas, to David Chapman, a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant, and Diane Chapman, a nurse. He grew up in Decatur, Georgia, alongside his younger sister, Susan. Chapman's childhood was marked by turmoil; he later described his father as physically abusive and emotionally distant, leading him to retreat into a world of fantasy and imaginary companions .
As a teenager, Chapman developed a fascination with the Beatles, particularly John Lennon. He learned to play the guitar and aspired to become a musician. However, his adolescence was also characterized by drug use, truancy, and a sense of alienation.
