Early Life and Medical Struggles
Dena Schlosser, born Dena Leitner in 1969 in upstate New York, faced significant health challenges from a young age. Diagnosed with hydrocephalus at eight, she underwent eight surgeries to implant shunts in her brain, heart, and abdomen before turning 13. Despite these hardships, she pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. It was there she met John Schlosser, her future husband, and together they eventually moved to Texas.
The Influence of Faith and the Water of Life Church
In Texas, the Schlossers became active members of the Water of Life Church, led by Doyle Davidson, a veterinarian-turned-preacher. Davidson's teachings emphasized that mental illnesses were manifestations of demonic possession, discouraging the use of psychiatric medications.
