In the quiet, early morning hours of June 25, 2017, a domestic dispute in a Barboursville, Virginia home escalated into a tragedy that would claim the lives of two brothers. Jordan Cavanaugh-Jackson, a 26-year-old Black / African American male, was shot and killed during an altercation with his younger brother, Christian Cavanaugh. The incident, which unfolded at their residence on Creels Mill Road, shattered the peace of the rural community.
Following the shooting, Christian Cavanaugh
fled the scene in a pickup truck. The Albemarle County Police Department was alerted to the sound of gunshots around 4 a.m. and quickly located the suspect's vehicle traveling on Stony Point Road. A brief police pursuit ensued, ending when Christian's truck crashed. As officers approached the wreckage, they discovered that the 21-year-old had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed confirmed the grim reality of a murder-suicide. Authorities determined that Christian Cavanaugh was the sole suspect in the death of his brother, Jordan. With the perpetrator deceased, the investigation was concluded, and no further arrests were made. The Albemarle County Police Department assured the public that it was an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
In the wake of this devastating event, friends and family gathered to mourn the loss of Jordan Cavanaugh-Jackson. His funeral service was held at the Covenant Church in Charlottesville, where those who knew him came to pay their respects and remember a life cut short by an act of domestic violence that also consumed the life of his brother.
