In the early hours of June 15, 2017, at approximately 12:05 a.m., Wilbert was riding his bicycle along the 2700 block of Lockwood Avenue in Baton Rouge. Surveillance footage from a nearby street camera captured a white SUV stopping in the middle of the street. Wilbert dropped his bike and attempted to flee on foot. Two Black males exited the vehicle, chased Wilbert, and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. Wilbert was pronounced dead at the scene.
