A Young Mother Disappears Just Days Before Her Baby Shower

In May 2017, a young Baltimore woman was preparing to celebrate the arrival of her second child. Akia Shawnta Eggleston, a 22-year-old African American mother, was eight months pregnant with a baby boy and had spent months organizing a baby shower. The celebration was supposed to be a joyful occasion, bringing together relatives and friends before the birth of her son. Instead, the gathering became the event that exposed her mysterious disappearance and began a devastating search for answers.

Akia was last known to be alive on May 3, 2017, in Baltimore, Maryland. Four days later, on May 7, her family reported her missing after she failed to appear at her own baby shower. Her disappearance was particularly alarming because she had been actively preparing for the birth, communicating frequently with loved ones, and making plans for her future. What initially appeared to be an unexplained missing-person case would eventually become a homicide investigation involving deception, conflicting relationships, extensive digital evidence, and a murder conviction secured despite the absence of her remains.

For nearly six years, investigators worked to determine what had happened to Akia and her unborn son. The investigation ultimately led to Michael Robertson, the father of her unborn child. Although a Baltimore jury convicted him of both murders in July 2023, the whereabouts of Akia and her baby have never been established.
