A Tragic Night in Washington Park: The Unsolved Murder of Jawon C. Carter

The Fateful Encounter at GoLo Gas Station

In the early hours of March 10, 2017, the quiet of Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood was shattered by a violent attack at the GoLo gas station located in the 100 block of East 51st Street. Four men were gathered in the station's foyer just before 2 a.m. when a gray, four-door Chevrolet approached. Without warning, occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the group, unleashing a barrage of bullets before speeding north on Indiana Avenue. Victims of the Assault

Among the victims were 24-year-olds Jawon C. Carter and Lavelle Cox. Carter, a resident of the Woodlawn neighborhood, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Stroger Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m. Cox, hailing from the Grand Boulevard area, also suffered multiple gunshot injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
