The Fateful Encounter at GoLo Gas Station
In the early hours of March 10, 2017, the quiet of Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood was shattered by a violent attack at the GoLo gas station located in the 100 block of East 51st Street. Four men were gathered in the station's foyer just before 2 a.m. when a gray, four-door Chevrolet approached. Without warning, occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the group, unleashing a barrage of bullets before speeding north on Indiana Avenue. The sudden eruption of gunfire left the community in shock and despair.
Victims of the Assault
Among the victims were 24-year-olds Jawon C. Carter and Lavelle Cox. Carter, a resident of the Woodlawn neighborhood, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Stroger Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m. Cox, hailing from the Grand Boulevard area, also suffered multiple gunshot injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
