A Deadly Encounter on Memorial Drive
On the evening of October 15, 2014, the tranquility of East Atlanta was shattered by a violent incident that left two men dead and another injured. Michael Edwards, 30, and Derrick McGinty, 37, were gunned down in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at 1800 Memorial Drive. A third individual sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but survived the attack. The assailants fled the scene in a red vehicle, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
The Immediate Aftermath and Initial Investigations
In the days following the murders, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) launched an intensive investigation to uncover the motives behind the shootings and identify the perpetrators. Homicide Lieutenant Charles Hampton indicated that a possible argument may have precipitated the violence, stating, "We understand it may have been some type of an argument that led up to the shootings."
