The Fateful Evening
On the evening of October 14, 2016, the lives of two young men were tragically cut short in Chicago's West Side Austin neighborhood. Jamel L. Thomas, 18, and his friend, Jermale Richardson, 20, were standing beside a parked car in the 5500 block of West Congress Parkway around 8 p.m. when a gray vehicle approached. Without warning, occupants of the vehicle opened fire, fatally wounding both men.
Community in Mourning
The sudden and violent loss of Jamel and Jermale sent shockwaves through the Austin community. Friends, family, and neighbors gathered to mourn the young men, lighting candles and sharing memories.
