A Promising Life Cut Short

On the evening of March 13, 2016, the San Bernardino community was shaken by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of 12-year-old Jason Spears. Jason and his 14-year-old cousin, Terrance, were walking to a local Circle K convenience store near Orange Street and Love Lane to get snacks when they were suddenly attacked in a drive-by shooting. The assailants, driving a full-size, dark-colored SUV, opened fire on the boys, hitting Jason in the chest and Terrance in the arm and leg. Despite their injuries, the boys managed to run nearly half a block to the store, where Jason collapsed in the parking lot and Terrance sought help inside. Jason was transported to St. Bernadine's Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Terrance survived his injuries and was treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

A Community in Mourning

In the wake of this tragedy, family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Jason's memory and call for an end to the violence plaguing their neighborhood. A vigil was held outside the Circle K where the shooting occurred, with attendees lighting candles and sharing heartfelt memories of the young boy.
