In March 2020, brothers Matthew and Philip Reagan embarked on a cross-country journey from their hometown near Cleveland, Ohio, to California. Philip, 29, had secured a new job at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge in California's Sequoia National Forest, marking his first significant move away from home. Matthew, 39, a mechanical engineer and father of five, decided to accompany his younger brother, turning the relocation into a memorable road trip. Their plan was to explore various landmarks along the way, including the historic Route 66 and the scenic Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. Unbeknownst to them, this journey would end in tragedy near the small community of Sawmill on the Navajo Nation Reservation.

The Fateful Route

On March 20, 2020, the brothers departed Ohio, filled with excitement and anticipation. They made significant progress, driving straight to Shamrock, Texas, before stopping for the night. The next day, they continued their journey, with plans to visit Canyon de Chelly. Relying on GPS navigation, they were directed onto an unpaved road near Sawmill, Arizona.
