On the evening of August 16, 2016, the tranquility of Birmingham's 2100 block of 31st Avenue North was shattered by a violent intrusion. At approximately 10 p.m., three masked men forcibly entered the apartment of 31-year-old Roger Cheatham. Inside, Roger and another adult male were subjected to a brutal attack, each sustaining gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to UAB Hospital, Roger succumbed to his injuries the following day. Miraculously, his children, present during the ordeal, were physically unharmed, though the emotional scars would be indelible.
A Mother's Unwavering Vigil
In the years following this heinous act, Angela Cheatham, Roger's mother, has been the embodiment of resilience and determination. Each anniversary of her son's death sees her returning to the very spot where her world was irrevocably altered. With heartfelt pleas, she reaches out to the community, imploring anyone with information to come forward. "I'm begging and begging, please someone if you know anything, can you please just come with some answers," Angela expressed during a 2024 vigil.
