A Tragic Evening in Austin
On the evening of July 28, 2017, the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side was shaken by a brutal act of violence. Nikia Latrice Betts, a 28-year-old mother, was walking down an alley in the 5200 block of West Kamerling Avenue with her 4-year-old son and a 19-year-old man when they were ambushed by gunmen. The assailants fired approximately a dozen shots, fatally wounding Betts with a gunshot to the head. Her young son and the 19-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to their arms but survived the attack.

Known affectionately as "Kia" to her friends and family, Nikia was a devoted mother and caregiver. She worked for Arlington Heights-based Abcor Home Health, providing compassionate care to those in need.
