A Routine Day Turns Tragic

On September 29, 1979, 52-year-old Dorothy Elizabeth Smock, a former teacher at Alice Byrne Elementary School and co-owner of Solar Engineering Systems in Yuma, Arizona, began her day with familiar routines. She was last heard from around 10:45 a.m. when her hairdresser called to reschedule a 1 p.m. appointment to noon. Dorothy agreed to the change, but when she failed to appear, concern began to mount. Repeated calls to her went unanswered, an unusual occurrence for the dependable educator and businesswoman.

A Gruesome Discovery

Later that evening, Dorothy's husband, James Smock, arrived at their business after she missed a church meeting they were both scheduled to attend.
