A Tragic Night in Merced

On the evening of July 12, 2003, the tranquility of Merced, California, was shattered by a heinous crime that remains unsolved to this day. At approximately 9:50 PM, sheriff's deputies responded to a distress call from 1301 Rita May Avenue, reporting gunshots and a house engulfed in flames. This was the residence of 43-year-old Robert Gilliam III, a man who would soon become the victim of a brutal and senseless murder.

The Attack Unfolds

Before the authorities arrived, Gilliam had been transported to a local hospital by a private party. Despite his grievous injuries, he managed to provide deputies with a harrowing account of the events. Gilliam recounted that he was at home when a green, 1990s model Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with four doors pulled up in front of his house. Three African American men exited the vehicle and, brandishing firearms, forced him into his own home.
