On the night of July 4, 1996, 33-year-old Sandra Payne went to a barbecue near the old Santa Fe Downs with a friend. Sometime between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m., witnesses saw her leave the gathering with a man named Robert L. Bryant in his blue Mazda pickup. She never returned for her own car and was never seen again.
