A Promising Life Cut Short
On June 14, 2016, the vibrant life of 16-year-old Reggina Jefferies was tragically ended in a senseless act of violence in downtown Oakland. Known for her passion for dance and her infectious energy, Reggina had just performed a heartfelt praise dance at a funeral service for two friends who had drowned over Memorial Day weekend. Moments after her performance, as she stood among fellow mourners on Franklin Street, gunfire erupted, striking Reggina and three others. Reggina succumbed to her injuries, leaving a community in mourning and a family devastated.
A Mother's Plea for Justice
In the wake of this tragedy, Reggina's mother, Onika Wilson, has been vocal in her quest for answers and justice. She recounted the harrowing timeline of events, noting that she had spoken to her daughter just minutes before the shooting. "I called my daughter at 5:25 and asked her if she was okay, and she said yes. I got a phone call that my daughter had been shot at 5:36," Wilson shared.
