Two hikers, photographing an are area known as Derry Dale, found a human skull in a fire pit. The skull was partially covered by shale rocks. The skull appears to have been damaged by the Wolf Fire in early 2002. Investigators retrieved the skull and brought it back to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office
