In the the early summer of 2018, a case emerged from Tacoma, Washington, concerning Ronald K. Jackson, a 71-year-old male who passed away of natural causes on July 30 at the Allenmore Medical Center. Despite a diligent and extensive search effort by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office, no next of kin were found for Mr. Jackson. His status as unclaimed posed challenges and highlighted the often-overlooked cases of individuals who, upon passing, find themselves without family or acquaintances to oversee their final arrangements.
Following established protocols, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office, located at 3619 Pacific Avenue in Tacoma, initiated procedures to honor Mr. Jackson respectfully. The office, identifiable by agency case number 18-1549, assigned the body to a rotation funeral home where Mr. Jackson was cremated. Subsequently, his cremains were returned to the medical examiner's office. Efforts to locate family having been exhausted, the decision was made to honor his life through a dignified interment.
With the realization that Mr. Jackson was a veteran, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office coordinated with the Veterans Affairs office to facilitate a proper and honorable burial. This unclaimed veteran was subsequently laid to rest at the Tahoma National Cemetery, ensuring his service and his life were acknowledged and remembered despite the absence of immediate family. The office's dedication to providing care and dignity, even in cases where individuals have no known kin, underscores their commitment to community service.
