On September 6, 2007, the Charleston County Coroner's Office was notified by the Charleston City Police Department of the death of a homeless man at Ansonborough Field in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The deceased, later identified as 64-year-old Edward Francis Dwyer, was last seen alive by a friend around 8:30 a.m. that day. The friend recalled that Mr. Dwyer had asked to be left alone. A worker from the nearby port observed Mr. Dwyer in the same location at midday and again at 5:30 p.m. when he finally contacted the authorities. Upon arrival, police and EMS pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Edward Francis Dwyer was known to local authorities, and his identity was confirmed through fingerprints. Upon examination, his body showed no signs of injury or trauma. He was found dressed in a dark gray polo shirt, gray shorts, white socks, black shoes, and a gray hat. Following the documentation and photographing of the scene, his body was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) by Carolina Funeral Service, pending the search for next of kin.
Medical records revealed that Mr. Dwyer had a significant medical history. He had lived as a homeless man for years, and despite efforts to locate his family, no next of kin could be identified. Authorization was obtained from probate court to have his body cremated. His cremains were eventually interred at Beaufort National Cemetery in section C3, grave 145. The case was handled by the Charleston County Coroner's Office, located at 4000 Salt Pointe Parkway in North Charleston, South Carolina.
