On April 26, 2009, the Charleston County Coroner's Office was informed by East Cooper Hospital’s emergency room of the likely natural death of George Main, a 59-year-old white male. Mr. Main was brought to the emergency room by EMS after he became short of breath and unresponsive while sitting in his car at the Pier One Imports parking lot. Earlier that day, he had locked his keys in his car and returned home to retrieve a spare set. His roommate drove him back to Pier One Imports, where he experienced a medical emergency. Despite resuscitative efforts by EMS, they were unable to revive him.
A conversation with Mr. Main's roommate and lifelong friend revealed that he had a history of heart disease but had not sought medical attention in recent years. Both had spent several years as missionaries overseas. The roommate indicated that Mr. Main had no known family.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office conducted an extensive search for next of kin but was unable to locate any relatives. As a result, authorization for cremation was sought and granted by the Probate Court. Mr. Main's remains were released to Palmetto Cremation Society.
