Patrolman Virgil Kirkman, aged 28, tragically lost his life on March 4, 1911, in Alexandria, Indiana. He was shot and killed while responding to a robbery in progress at a local pawnshop. The incident began when a suspect, with a red handkerchief covering his face, entered the shop and demanded the day's receipts from the owner.
