On the early morning of August 9, 2017, a violent incident unfolded in Madison County, Indiana, involving 29-year-old Timothy Lampkins, an African American man from Marion. Around 3:45 a.m., Lampkins managed to call 911 from his vehicle, reporting to dispatchers that he had been shot. Emergency responders traced his location to a rural area near Alexandria, specifically near the intersection of State Road 9 and County Road 1450 North.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered Lampkins inside his car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, neck, and arm. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was initially transported to a local hospital in Anderson before being airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in serious condition, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The shooting triggered an immediate and large-scale police response in the surrounding area. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies established a perimeter and launched a manhunt for the shooter. The search operation was extensive enough to cause significant disruption to the local community; both the Alexandria Community Schools and the Madison-Grant United School Corporation delayed the start of their classes by two hours that morning as a safety precaution while police scoured the area.
Later that same morning, around 8:00 a.m., the search concluded when officers spotted a suspect emerging from a cornfield not far from the crime scene. The individual was identified as Sierra Nicole Swoveland, a 19-year-old woman from Muncie, Indiana. She was taken into custody without further incident. Initial reports indicated that Swoveland was preliminarily charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery following her arrest, reflecting the gravity of Lampkins' condition at the time.
As the legal case progressed, the charges were adjusted to reflect the fatal outcome of the shooting. Court records and subsequent state board documentation indicate that Sierra Swoveland was eventually convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Lampkins' death.
