In the quiet, early morning hours of a Tuesday in October 2011, the tranquility of a Carmel, Indiana condominium complex was shattered by the sounds of a domestic dispute that escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter. Suzanne Saunders, a 50-year-old woman, was fatally shot by her estranged husband, 46-year-old Aaron Saunders, in what police would later rule a murder-suicide.
The violent end to their relationship unfolded inside Suzanne's home at the Traditions on the Monon, a grim event witnessed in part by her three children.
The morning began with an argument between Suzanne and Aaron, who had arrived at the residence while the children, two boys aged 16 and 11, and a 12-year-old girl, were preparing for school. The disagreement quickly escalated, culminating in the sound of gunshots and their mother's scream. The oldest of the children bravely called 911 to report the shooting. Neighbors also alerted authorities after hearing a woman's scream.
When Carmel police arrived at the scene in the 900 block of 3rd Avenue, they were met by one of the sons who directed them to the home, telling them that his stepfather had shot his mother. Inside, officers discovered the bodies of both Suzanne and Aaron Saunders. Both had sustained gunshot wounds, and a handgun was found near Aaron Saunders' body.
The children, who had hidden or fled the immediate vicinity of the shooting, were physically unharmed. Investigators learned that the boys ran from the home after the shots were fired, while the daughter hid in an upstairs room. The incident left a peaceful community in shock and a family irrevocably broken by an act of domestic violence. Autopsies were planned to confirm the causes of death.
