In the late summer of 2013, the life of 30-year-old Amber N. Stitt was tragically cut short in a violent encounter on a street in Edinburgh, Indiana. A graduate of Edinburgh Community High School, Amber was a mother to a son and an employee at Ditech Inc. in her hometown. Her life, however, had taken a tumultuous turn in the weeks leading up to her death.
On the evening of Monday, August 26, 2013, Amber Stitt was walking near the intersection of Franklin and East Main Cross streets when
her estranged husband, 30-year-old Kevin Stitt, approached her on a moped. In a horrifying turn of events witnessed by others, Kevin stopped, lifted the seat of his moped to retrieve a revolver, and fatally shot Amber. After killing his estranged wife, Kevin then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life at the scene. Amber was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The tragedy was foreshadowed by escalating tensions and threats. Just two weeks prior to the murder-suicide, Amber had gone to the Edinburgh police to report that her husband had threatened to kill her and then himself. Despite the threat, she declined to press charges at that time. On the very day of her death, Amber had taken the step of seeking a personal protection order against her husband, a measure that tragically came too late to save her. The couple, who were married and had a son together, had been separated.
