In the summer of 2015, the community of La Porte, Indiana, was shaken by the death of 37-year-old Robert J. 'Rob' Grant. A 12-year veteran of the Michigan City Police Department, Grant, a white male, was found deceased in his pickup truck on Saturday, August 1, 2015. The cause of his death was determined to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities quickly ruled out any foul play.
The events leading up to Grant's death began to unfold just days earlier.
On July 28, 2015, he was arrested following an investigation by the Indiana State Police. The inquiry was initiated after the Michigan City Police Chief, Mark Swistek, received information regarding possible illegal activities involving an officer. The investigation led to charges against Grant for two counts of official misconduct and one count of possession of a legend drug. He was subsequently released on a cash bond.
Following his arrest, Grant was placed on administrative suspension and had resigned from the police force. A few days later, concern grew among his family when they were unable to reach him. A local attorney contacted the La Porte County Sheriff's deputies on their behalf, prompting a search. Authorities located Grant's vehicle in a remote area near County Road 300 North and County Road 400 West, where they discovered his body. The La Porte County coroner's office determined that an autopsy was unnecessary as the cause of death was evident. There were no suspects or arrests in connection with his death as it was ruled a suicide.
