In the summer of 2021, a domestic dispute in La Porte, Indiana, escalated into a gruesome series of events that ended the life of Randy Allen, a 34-year-old male. The fatal incident occurred on July 27 inside the Maple Tree Apartments apartment he shared with his wife, Thessalonica Allen, and her two children. The argument reportedly began after Randy discovered a social media post on his wife's computer, leading to accusations of infidelity.
According to the children's testimony to
investigators, they heard a loud bang from their mother's bedroom. Rushing to the room, they found their stepfather on the floor, bleeding and pleading for them to call 911. Their mother, however, instructed them not to and sent them back to their rooms. An autopsy later revealed that a single gunshot to Randy Allen's arm had entered his torso and struck his spinal cord, leaving him immobilized and leading to his death from blood loss.
What followed the shooting was a horrific attempt to conceal the crime, a task in which Thessalonica Allen enlisted her own children, both under the age of 16. That night, she woke them and tried to have them help drag Randy's body to his car, but he was too heavy. The next day, she purchased cleaning supplies and an ax. She then dismembered her husband's body, cutting off his legs because he would not fit into a tote. Again, she asked her children for help, this time to place the dismembered remains into the container. The plan was to transport the body to South Bend and set it on fire, but the tote remained too heavy for them to move. The dismembered body was ultimately found in a closet in one of the children's rooms.
The crime came to light when Thessalonica contacted an ex-partner, the father of one of her children, claiming Randy was abusing their child. When the man arrived at the apartment, she showed him Randy's body and asked for help in disposing of it. He refused and, after she drove him back to Michigan, he contacted the police. Officers located Thessalonica Allen in the parking lot of an Ace Hardware store. Upon their approach, she claimed that Randy had been beating her. During questioning, she confessed to the shooting, initially stating it was in self-defense after he choked her. She also admitted to dismembering his body with an ax because she panicked. Investigators, however, found a handwritten note detailing a plan to kill him.
Thessalonica Allen was arrested and faced multiple felony charges, including murder, abuse of a corpse, altering a death scene, child neglect, and contributing to the delinquency of minors. At her trial, her defense argued she acted in self-defense, citing a protective order she had previously obtained against her husband, though the prosecution claimed she had lied to get it. The jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes before finding her guilty on all counts. Citing aggravating factors such as premeditation, a lack of remorse, and the profound psychological trauma inflicted on her children, the judge sentenced her to 63 years in prison.
