Steven Charles Oliger, a 63-year-old male, passed away at his home in Shelbyville, Indiana, on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. Neighbors described him as a friendly and pleasant man, often seen smiling and waving. He was a veteran of the US Army and had recently retired from a successful professional career.
On the night of his death, police responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired at his residence around 10:30 PM.
Upon arrival, officers found Oliger on his back deck armed with a revolver. After Oliger discharged his weapon, an officer fired their rifle in his direction. Oliger then fell to the ground, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
An investigation into the shooting was initiated to determine the origin of the fatal shot. Authorities stated that it was unclear whether the gunshot wound was inflicted by the responding officer or if it was self-inflicted. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.
