On the evening of Saturday, August 26, 2017, deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to her home in Prince's Lakes for a welfare check. The request was made by her husband's stepfather, who had grown concerned over recent domestic issues. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene on the back patio of the residence.
Melissa and her husband, Jason Wojcik, were found deceased. The subsequent investigation by the Johnson County Coroner's Office determined that the couple had died in a murder-suicide. She later served in the Arizona and Ohio Army National Guards before transferring to the Indiana Army National Guard. At the time of her death, she was on the verge of being promoted to Sergeant First Class. Her dedication to her country was evident in the numerous awards she received during her service.
