On what should have been a festive Christmas Day in 2017, tragedy struck the Noblesville, Indiana, home of Joyce Hunter-Moon, an 81-year-old female. Joyce, along with her 84-year-old husband of 61 years, Donald Moon, were fatally shot by their 48-year-old son, Todd Moon, in a shocking act of violence that ended with the son taking his own life. The tight-knit community was left reeling from the news of the double murder-suicide that unfolded inside the family's residence.

County Sheriff's Office was called to the home on the afternoon of December 25th after a family member reported a shooting. That family member had arrived at the home to find Todd in a state of rage. Events escalated quickly as Todd retrieved a handgun and shot his mother. He then proceeded to a back room where he shot his father before returning to the front of the house and turning the gun on himself. The relative was able to get Todd's two juvenile children safely out of the house and to a nearby fire station to alert the authorities.
When deputies arrived, they discovered the bodies of Joyce, Donald, and Todd Moon. Subsequent autopsies confirmed that both Joyce and Donald died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Todd's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators found no note at the scene and were left with no clear motive for the devastating actions taken by Todd Moon. According to the sheriff's office, there had been no prior criminal charges, known history of mental illness, or domestic violence calls involving the family, leaving a painful void of understanding for the surviving family members and the community.
