In the quiet suburb of Fishers, Indiana, the life of 44-year-old Kristal Sergi, a beloved preschool teacher, was tragically cut short on October 24, 2018. On that Wednesday evening, just before 6 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting the sound of gunshots in the upscale Saxony neighborhood. Upon entering a home on Dorster Street, officers discovered the bodies of Kristal and her 52-year-old husband, Frank Sergi II.
Both were longtime and respected teachers in the Hamilton Southeastern school district. Kristal had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the deaths quickly painted a grim picture of a domestic tragedy. The Hamilton County coroner officially ruled Kristal's death a homicide and Frank's a suicide. Evidence and information gathered by detectives led them to believe that the couple were the only individuals directly involved in the incident, and there were no other suspects. At the time of their deaths, Frank and Kristal were separated and in the midst of divorce proceedings. The home they once shared was up for sale. Despite the turmoil in their relationship, there were no prior reports of violence between them.

Kristal Sergi had been a preschool teacher at Hoosier Road Elementary for 21 years, remembered by parents and colleagues as an 'amazing person' and a 'light.' Frank Sergi was an art teacher at Fall Creek Intermediate, having been with the school district since 1992. In the wake of the tragedy, the school district canceled classes and provided grief counselors for students and staff. A candlelight vigil was held where grieving coworkers, students, and parents gathered to remember the teachers and lean on each other for support. The incident was determined to be a murder-suicide, with Frank Sergi as the sole suspect in the death of his wife. A friend of the family reported receiving a disturbing text from Frank shortly before the shooting, asking them to take care of their children. No arrests were made as the perpetrator had taken his own life.
