Late on the night of April 13, 2019, a violent sequence of events unfolded at the Scott Villa Mobile Home Trailer Park in Scottsburg, Indiana, resulting in the death of 34-year-old White male Larry D. Marlowe. Officers from the Scottsburg City Police were dispatched to the residence located at 815 West Lake Road around 11:55 p.m. following reports from neighbors of a disturbance and the sound of gunfire.
As law enforcement mobilized to the scene, a second call was placed to authorities, this time by the homeowner of Lot 21, identified as 29-year-old Michael Brandon Jones.
Jones reportedly told dispatchers that he had just shot a man who was attempting to force entry into his home. Upon their arrival, police discovered Marlowe’s body at the entrance of the mobile home, where he had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The situation quickly escalated into a standoff as Jones retreated into the residence and locked the doors, refusing to communicate with the officers outside. During the containment of the scene, witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing an additional gunshot originating from inside the trailer.
The Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team was called in to assist with the barricaded subject. After obtaining a search warrant to enter the premises, tactical teams breached the mobile home to find that the standoff had reached a tragic conclusion. Michael Brandon Jones was found deceased inside the residence, having died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigative reports from the Indiana State Police subsequently classified the incident as a murder-suicide. While the initial call from Jones alleged that Marlowe was an intruder, the investigation concluded with the deaths of both men at the scene. Because the primary suspect, Jones, took his own life before he could be taken into custody, there were no arrests or criminal trials associated with the case. The investigation was handled by the Indiana State Police in conjunction with the Scottsburg Police Department and the Scott County Coroner’s Office.
