In the autumn of 2021, the life of Sa'Sha Nichelle Agnew, a 30-year-old Black female and devoted mother of three, was tragically cut short in her South Bend, Indiana, home. On the afternoon of October 15, a distressing phone call from Agnew to her mother, reporting that armed men were entering her house, set in motion a series of events that would end in heartbreak. When contact with her daughter was lost, Agnew's mother promptly alerted the police.
Upon arriving at Agnew's residence in the 800 block of South Lake Street, officers discovered the front door wide open. Inside, they found a grim scene: Sa'Sha Agnew was unconscious on the floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the presence of her own gun near her body, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed pointed to a violent struggle and a robbery gone horribly wrong, with shell casings from three different handguns recovered from the home.
The investigation into Sa'Sha Agnew's murder led to the identification of two suspects: Travis William Logan Jr. and Tobias Shaw. Crucial evidence in the case came from the home's surveillance system, which captured video of several individuals entering the residence. Logan was specifically identified by a distinctive pair of glasses he was seen wearing as he entered the house, which were later found near Agnew's body. DNA testing of these glasses and a handgun found at the scene further implicated him. Although he initially denied knowing Agnew or ever being at her home, the evidence against him was substantial.
In November 2021, Tobias Shaw was charged with murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Subsequently, in March 2022, Travis William Logan Jr. was also charged with murder. Logan was found guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and a firearm enhancement in March 2023. In April 2023, he was sentenced to a total of 90 years in prison: 60 years for murder, 25 years for conspiracy to commit robbery, and an additional five years for the firearm enhancement. The trial for the second suspect, Tobias Shaw, was scheduled to begin in May 2023.
