A mother leaves in the early morning hours for her job but never arrives In the pre-dawn hours of March 15, 2019, 30-year-old Najah Ferrell, a mother of two and foster mother to three, left her home in Avon, Indiana. She was headed to her third day of orientation at a new job at Panera Bread. Surveillance footage captured her black 2018 Nissan Altima leaving her apartment complex around 3 a.m. Her fiancé and children were the last to see her. Ferrell, known for her dependability, never arrived at work.
The alarm was raised later that day when she failed to pick up her children from school, an act her family described as entirely out of character.
The initial days of the investigation yielded few clues. Nearly two weeks after she vanished, her car was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a Studio Movie Grill, about two miles from her new job. Shortly thereafter, some of her personal items, including her ID and bank cards, were found by construction workers near I-465 and Lafayette Road in Indianapolis. The discoveries were ominous, but Ferrell's whereabouts remained a mystery. Her family and friends organized searches, desperate for answers, while the Avon Police Department, along with the Indiana State Police and the FBI, pursued the investigation.
A grim discovery in April 2019, over 100 miles away from where she was last seen, shifted the case from a missing person's investigation to a death investigation. Two fishermen at a retention pond in Crown Point, Indiana, found a human foot. A tattoo of Najah's name on the foot led authorities to believe it was hers, a fact later confirmed by DNA testing. The coroner determined the foot had been severed after her death. Despite extensive searches of the pond and the surrounding area, no other remains were ever found.
To this day, Najah Ferrell's case remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly named.
