In the early hours of a summer morning, the life of 7-year-old Jeremiah Khari Moore was tragically cut short in East Chicago, Indiana. On July 12, 2022, Jeremiah was asleep in his car seat in the back of his family's van as they returned home from visiting relatives in Chicago. Near the intersection of Guthrie and Main streets, just blocks from their house, their vehicle was ambushed by gunfire.
The family initially mistook the sounds for fireworks, a common occurrence in mid-July.
The horrifying reality set in as bullets riddled their van from multiple directions. Jeremiah was struck by a bullet in the back of his head. In a state of panic, his family rushed him to St. Catherine's Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The sudden and violent loss of Jeremiah left his family, including his pregnant mother and his siblings who were also in the van, devastated and searching for answers.
In the wake of the shooting, the East Chicago Police Department launched an investigation into the young boy's death. Investigators believe the family may have been followed from a gas station where they had noticed a red Dodge Charger with tinted windows. It is thought that multiple shooters were involved in the attack. Despite the ongoing investigation and the family's public pleas for information, no arrests have been made in connection with Jeremiah's murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. His mother has expressed the belief that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity. The family and community activists have continued to canvass the neighborhood, distributing flyers and hoping that someone will come forward with information that could bring justice for Jeremiah.
