In the early morning hours of February 25, 2014, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in Glade Spring, Virginia, culminating in the death of 44-year-old Kevin Palmer. The incident, which also claimed the lives of three of his family members, was the final act in a long history of domestic turmoil.
Leading up to that fateful day, there had been clear signs of escalating conflict within the Palmer family.
Kevin Palmer's wife, Kristin Palmer, a 46-year-old teacher, and their 17-year-old son, Griffin, had recently sought refuge at the home of Kristin's parents, Terry and Nancy Griffin. This move came after years of reported physical and emotional abuse at the hands of Kevin. Just days before the tragic incident, Kristin and Griffin had filed formal complaints against him, which resulted in his arrest on two counts of assault and battery. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, he was released on a $2,500 bond. In the hours immediately preceding the violence, Kristin had been granted an emergency protective order against her husband.
Armed with two firearms, Kevin Palmer forcibly entered the Griffin's home. Once inside, he shot his wife, Kristin, his son, Griffin, and his mother-in-law, 74-year-old Nancy Griffin. His father-in-law, Terry Griffin, was also shot but managed to escape and seek help from a neighbor. After shooting his family members, Kevin Palmer then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
Emergency services arrived to a horrific scene. Kevin Palmer and Nancy Griffin were pronounced dead inside the home. Griffin Palmer died while being transported to the hospital, and Kristin Palmer succumbed to her injuries later at a medical center. The investigation that followed confirmed the long-standing domestic dispute as the catalyst for the tragedy. As Kevin Palmer was the sole perpetrator and was deceased, there were no further arrests or trials in connection with the case. The incident left the Glade Spring community in a state of shock and mourning for the lives lost.
