Sergio Barba, aged 18, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in the early hours of June 11, 2007, in Chicago’s Archer Heights neighborhood. Barba was a member of a local street gang, and his killing appeared to be part of an ongoing cycle of gang-related violence. Following Barba's death, two of his associates, Jorge Morones and Orlando Rojas, sought revenge for what they believed was a targeted attack on one of their own. Their actions ultimately resulted in the fatal shooting of Roberto Duran, a 14-year-old who was mistakenly targeted during their retaliatory act. The incident took place while Duran was walking with friends, and he was killed after being shot once in the abdomen. He was later pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
The suspects were eventually apprehended thanks to footage captured by one of the Chicago Police Department's pole-mounted street cameras. These cameras were primarily used to monitor small-time drug activity, but in this case, they proved crucial in identifying the suspects fleeing the scene. The footage allowed detectives to link the men to the crime and make subsequent arrests. The entire incident was described as being rooted in gang violence, and it highlighted the ongoing tension and violence among rival factions in Chicago at the time.
Sergio Cornejo, a suspected member of the same gang and believed to be connected to a separate gang-related killing in June 2007, was also sought by the FBI for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Cornejo allegedly participated in the beating and killing of Enrique Chavez after a vehicle crash led to a confrontation. The chaotic and violent nature of these incidents emphasizes the complexities of gang dynamics and the retaliatory nature of street violence during that period in Chicago.
