On October 29, 2017, Brandon Pakeman, a 20-year-old from San Leandro, California, was shot and killed in West Oakland. His body was found in the early morning hours by Oakland police officers responding to a ShotSpotter activation in the 1200 block of 8th Street. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the Acorn housing project, an area that has experienced frequent incidents of gun violence.
